While Congressional Republicans hung around Washington yesterday, putting on a show for the cameras and asking Congress to return to debate old ideas that won't result in a drop of gasoline for years -- perhaps decades -- the McCain campaign mocked ideas that will help consumers at the pump today.
McCain may think it's funny that practical solutions like checking your tire pressure will help consumers now, but the experts aren't laughing. Properly inflated tires save gas, tire life, and human life. Why John McCain thinks that's funny, I don't know. Probably the same reasons he runs ads about Britney Spears and mocks biblical figures in as part of his increasingly immature campaign strategy. He's got nothing else. Heck, until a couple weeks ago, he didn't even know what gas cost, and didn't seem to care. The Straight Talk Express is limping along on four flats, and McCain's solution is to increase the record profits of big oil and rake in their campaign contributions.
John McCain may think saving money on gas is a joke, but the rest of us are pretty concerned. Here's what the experts have to say about properly inflated tires and increased fuel efficiency.

You would think from the juvenile reaction of the McCain camp that tire pressure is the main plank of Obama's energy platform. It isn't, of course. Senator Obama presented a comprehensive energy plan in Lansing, Michigan where he spoke of the need to focus on real energy solutions, not the false arguments proposed by Republicans, whose "Drill Now" mantra will not ease the burden on consumers, but will only serve to add to the record profits of their Exxon pals and continue our oil dependence. As Sen. Obama reminds us, the energy debate has been going on for 30 years, and John McCain has been opposing solutions for much of that time.

Senator Obama spent his 47th birthday in Boston last night, where he celebrated with Senator Kerry and a group of supporters.

Just a couple points about the NECN report. Obama has not reversed his opposition to drilling, he's just willing to make compromises to get the larger plan enacted. It's been a while, but if I recall correctly, that's what real Presidents do. And the Republican guy and his friend with the sign don't seem to care much about the 292 million barrels per year we could save with proper tire inflation and tuneups. That's about what we might get from drilling ANWR, at no cost to consumers or the environment. And we'd get it now, not in 2025.
Wonder if I can get my hands on one of those Obama tire gauges the RNC is handing out?
Senator Kerry was also in North Adams yesterday. Capital News 9 has video.
