Oops, he did it again.

In an interview with Chris Matthews, John McCain promised to run a 'clean campaign', and not repeat the nasty Reublican smears of 2004.

He said it on multiple occasions.

So much for McCain's promises.

The Matthews interview was April 15, just three and a half months ago. McCain must have forgotten his promise, because he's run three nasty personal attack ads in a row, filled with lies and juvenile smears.

The first was an attack on Obama's patriotism and his support for the troops, which was completely debunked and roundly ridiculed. That didn't stop him from the second attack, an ad blaming Sen. Obama for high gas prices. We've got two oil guys in the White House, gas was $1.40 when Bush was first selected, and $4 gas prices are somehow Obama's fault? It didn't take much for people to figure out how stupid that was.

Then, McCain went there. He ran an ad comparing a United States Senator and past president of the Harvard Law Review to Britney Spears.

Is McCain nuts?

Wait, don't answer that.

The McCain/Britney ad got a big goose-egg from the Cleveland Plain Dealer, who rated the ad a zero on the truth scale (I think they were giving McCain the benefit of the doubt). Regardless, McCain stood by the ad, actually claiming he was 'proud' of it.

Senator Kerry responded to the negative attacks on Sen. Obama, and went head to head with Sen. Jon Kyl. Guess who won?

Wow. The most common response I've heard to that was "Did you see Sen. Kerry kick Jon Kyl's ass?"

Favorite exchange:
JK: "What does Britney Spears have to do with healthcare, with employment, with foreign policy?"

Kyl: "Nothing."

JK: "Well, there you go."

OK, not precise quotes, but you get the gist. Sen. Kerry took Kyl to the woodshed, and rightly so. The Republican attacks have become so juvenile, so pitiful, so small, that they deserve derision. And we need to make sure each and every one is addressed.

The Obama campaign has launched a website, "Low Road Express", to shine a light on the gutter politics of John McCain, and bravenewpac has released a video in response to the Republicans' ugly campaign.
