Watching the Senator on Face the Nation with us!
Sen. Kerry will be on Face the Nation today, and we'll be here to watch it with you. Tune to CBS at 10:30 EDT (check local listings) and live blog the action with us. You only need a TV, a computer and an opinion, so if you've got all that, you're welcome to join in.

What will the topics be this week? The Senator's trip to the Middle East? Obama's surge in the polls? The Republican war against the middle class? The Plymouth 4th of July parade?
They probably won't talk about the parade, but isn't that a great picture?
My guess is that they'll ask him a bunch of bogus questions about the latest media-fueled fake controversy, and he'll try to divert to real issues. That's usually how these things go.
Let's find out together. 'See' you at 10:30!

Good morning all. Just saw Schieffer on the CBS Sunday show saying that JK would be on and he added that JK thought about running McCain as VP in '04. Argggh! If I hear that one more time I am going to scream.
Posted by MH | July 6, 2008 10:24 AM
Hey guys, good morning!
(and a belated happy birthday to KerryVision!)
Am I the first one here?
Anyway, in the leadup they said "in 2004 Kerry thought about making McCain his running mate. Now he has some different thoughts" - something like that. Argghh. But I can't wait to hear how JK answered that one (although I can imagine a few other choice words running through his head at the question).
Posted by ProSense | July 6, 2008 10:24 AM
First here, I see. This is going to be an interesting program.
Bob Schieffer just said in an preview comment that Kerry considered McCain as his running mate in 2004, but now he has other ideas.
The media needs to stop fueling this McCain-driven distortion.
Anyway, looking forward to the interview.
Posted by ProSense | July 6, 2008 10:25 AM
Well, I was first when I started typing. LOL
Posted by MH | July 6, 2008 10:26 AM
Hi fedup - you beat my post by about as long as JK thought about McCain as running mate in 2004. :)
Posted by Faith | July 6, 2008 10:28 AM
Morning, all!
I saw the promo about running-mate-gate.
Sheesh. I hope Schieffer can find something more timely to discuss than that old rumor.
Posted by fedup | July 6, 2008 10:30 AM
MH, so true. :-)
Posted by BostonGirlzRock | July 6, 2008 10:30 AM
Hi! Hope you don't mind if I stop by. I love live blogs with JK
Posted by MH | July 6, 2008 10:31 AM
Did you all just see that crappy McCain ad?
The end frame: "no new solutions" but all the examples were OLD solutions!! (nuclear, drilling, lower gas taxes). heh heh, they are really insulting Americans' intelligence.
Posted by Faith | July 6, 2008 10:31 AM
Did anyone else just see that stupid McCain commercial? How does suspending the gas tax relate to conservation?
Posted by Faith | July 6, 2008 10:32 AM
Woo Hoo! JK up first!
Talking about Obama's Iraq position.
Posted by fedup | July 6, 2008 10:33 AM
JK laughs, so did I, how ridiculous, the SPIN, the SPIN.
Posted by ProSense | July 6, 2008 10:33 AM
Good it's a face off between Kerry and Graham as opposed to one speaking before the other.
Posted by Faith | July 6, 2008 10:35 AM
Nice explanation of Obama's position by JK. No change in Obama's fundamental position. May require tactical evaluation. The bottom list is that the republicans are trying to make an issue where there isn't one.
Posted by Otter | July 6, 2008 10:35 AM
Well, as usual, the lighting is too flat and the green-screened "face the nation" background behind the Senator is annoying. But his makeup is good and his hair is great and he looks calm and collected and even though I still hate that friggin pinkish tie he always wears at least it's tied properly and the knot is straight.
Oh, yeah, and what he's saying makes sense too.
:0)
Posted by ProSense | July 6, 2008 10:36 AM
Kerry made the point that McCain has been wrong about the reconstruction effort, wrong about the oil paying for the war, wrong about Shiite on Sunni violence and his judgment about timelines.
Posted by Otter | July 6, 2008 10:37 AM
Lindsey Graham, of course, is still a doink.
Posted by ProSense | July 6, 2008 10:37 AM
Graham is simply spewing talking points, and they don't make any sense. He said Obama's position was to listen to commanders on the ground so he doesn't know what he's gonna do.
Posted by MH | July 6, 2008 10:38 AM
Arghhhh!!!!!! running-mate-gate!
Good response by JK: MCCAIN has changed - not the McCain who defined himself as a maverick - this is "wannabe president John McCan" - flip flopped on more issues than they ever even accused JK of...
Posted by Otter | July 6, 2008 10:39 AM
JK: this is *not* the John McCain I knew back then.
Posted by Faith | July 6, 2008 10:39 AM
JK - John McCain has changed. If you like the Bush economy, then John McCain is going to give you a third term of Bush and Rove. Talking about McCain's flip flops and alignment with Bush.
Posted by ProSense | July 6, 2008 10:39 AM
Kerry hitting McCain on flip flops and his embrace of Bush's tax cuts and other policies. He says that McCain believes going into Iraq was the right decision.
Posted by Otter | July 6, 2008 10:40 AM
JK: No, Bob, I'm not challenging McCain's integrity, I'm challenging his judgment.
Posted by MH | July 6, 2008 10:40 AM
wow, did McCain really once say there was no history of violence between Sunni and Shia?!
Wow, just wow.
Posted by ProSense | July 6, 2008 10:41 AM
Schieffer asked Kerry if he's questioning McCain's integrity. That's a BS question.
Kerry's response was perfect: no, questioning his judgment.
Posted by MH | July 6, 2008 10:42 AM
Lindsey you f--- McCain NEVER WAS "asked to be Senator Kerry's running mate".
Not that I had any respect for Graham to lose.
Posted by Faith | July 6, 2008 10:43 AM
OK, that was a disgusting question by Schieffer, and a really good response by Sen. Kerry.
Schieffer - "Are you challenging McCain's integrity?" (WTF?!)
JK - "I'm challenging his judgement."
paraphrased, but what the hell kind of question was that, and where did it come from?
Posted by ProSense | July 6, 2008 10:44 AM
Graham is lame, tried to turn the VP distortion around, claiming that McCain will not be asking Kerry to be his VP.
Now he's talking about the surge working, and that Obama didn't support it. Iraq is in the same stalemate position it has been for years.
Posted by MH | July 6, 2008 10:44 AM
Graham: "the enemy's on their knees" - yeah right, go ask my two nephews who are there now.
Grrr.....
Posted by Otter | July 6, 2008 10:45 AM
JK getting all up in Graham's grille in the course of his taking on the Al Qaeda question (aka the surge ain't what's changing things right now)...
Posted by ProSense | July 6, 2008 10:46 AM
Kerry is talking about the effects of the surge. He says U.S. troops are able to provide pockets of the security, but that the push back against al-Qaeda is a Sunni political decision. He said that the reconciliation is still not resolved.
Posted by fedup | July 6, 2008 10:48 AM
Great answer on the Isreal-Iran question.
Posted by Faith | July 6, 2008 10:49 AM
JK- The fundamental political reconciliation in Iraq has not yet happened.
Barack Obama has never talked about 'pulling the rug out from under them (Iraqis)'.
The surge was set up to resolve the political differences. That hasn't happened.
Obama will take no option off the table re Iran. It would be very unwise to proceed to a military option without first doing the diplomacy.
Now Graham spewing. What's with the 'in a box' talking point? Is that the new Republican line, and if so, what does it mean? He's said that a half dozen times already.
Posted by ProSense | July 6, 2008 10:50 AM
What the hell is Graham talking about? Obama had to give McCain a history lesson on the threat of the Soviet Union vs. Iran.
Here:
Obama hit back hard. "John McCain, he's said, "Oh, Obama doesn't understand the threat of Iran." I understand the threat of Iran. But what I know is that the Soviet Union had the ability to destroy the world several times over, had satellites spanning the globe, had huge masses of conventional military power -- all directed at destroying us."

Guess it's like a YouTube music video parody, Faith:
"I got Iraq in a box for you"

Welcome BostonGirlzRock! Good to have you here!

Schieffer asking whether Bush should go to the Olympics opening ceremonies.
JK: we've been through politicizing the Olympics before; if he goes and says what needs to be said it could be a good thing.
Graham basically agreed.
Posted by MH | July 6, 2008 10:55 AM
JK: Guantanamo should be shut; Bush put a stain on our reputation by how he handled that.
Posted by Faith | July 6, 2008 10:56 AM
JK - Gitmo should be shut down. The prisoners should have been given trials.
Gitmo 'Runs against America's values.'
Posted by MH | July 6, 2008 10:59 AM
Good job by JK! I didn't record it so I hope I can find a transcript later. ;)

Well played as always, sir, well played.
Posted by fedup | July 6, 2008 11:03 AM
Well I wish that JK had addressed the nonsense about McCain as his running mate back in '04, but he was on a mission to set the record straight on McCain NOW. Hopefully he will be able to respond to that more clearly in a future interview.
Posted by BostonGirlzRock | July 6, 2008 11:04 AM
Sorry I was late with comments. I got phone calls and had to rewind the video to see what Sen. Kerry had to say.
I think that Sen Kerry did a good job on the consistency issue for Sen. Obama. That position has always been to be attentive to conditions on the ground during a withdrawal. There is no change in position for Obama, or for Sen. Kerry.
Posted by MH | July 6, 2008 11:08 AM
fedup, that is what I like about JK (one of many things) - he knows this isn't about him.
I hope someday these stupid media myths get shattered but for now I just want to have someone competent running this country for a change. It really didn't seem so much to ask in 2000 and 2004, but apparently it was...sigh. I sure hope the country has wised up enough for this election.
Posted by YvonneCa | July 6, 2008 11:09 AM
Good Morning, everyone! I'm late to the party...found out that this isn't on until 8:30 here (so it won't start for another half-hour). :(
I haven't read all your posts yet, so I'm looking forward to that JK Group insight :) ...and then I'll watch the interview.
Posted by fedup | July 6, 2008 11:11 AM
MH, agree 100%.
Posted by Faith | July 6, 2008 11:11 AM
Nicely done, Senator!
Posted by Otter | July 6, 2008 11:11 AM
Now, if we could only get Bob Schieffer to realize that this isn't about *him*...
Posted by MH | July 6, 2008 11:15 AM
So true, Otter. But I'm not holding my breath.
Posted by YvonneCa | July 6, 2008 11:21 AM
I just read through all the comments, and you guys are GREAT...as usual. Thank you for all the insight. I can't wait to see the interview (ten minutes and counting).
To MH, you said:

It wasn't too much to ask. I share your hopes. :)

Sen. Kerry did a great job of refuting Graham and McCain.
McCain wants to promote the idea that the Surge is responsible for any and all good things that have happened in Iraq. Kerry pointed out that Al Anbar and the rest of the Sunni Triangle began to stabilize BEFORE the surge began. The tribal leaders in that area had already begun to kick out the foreigners, as Sen. Kerry had repeatedly said they would. (How many times has Kerry said that the Iraqis don't want the foreign jihadists there and will drive them out? Kerry has been saying this since, ah, forever.)
Posted by wisteria | July 6, 2008 11:49 AM
Excellent live blogging everyone! And Senator Kerry did an outstanding job out manuvering and out smarting Graham and the press.
Posted by YvonneCa | July 6, 2008 11:56 AM
Great job, Senator Kerry! I'm so glad to have voted for you. :)

Kerry says McCain lacks judgment to be president by Hope Yen (AP)
WASHINGTON - John Kerry says Republican John McCain doesn't have the judgment to be president.
If that's the case, then it's probably a good thing McCain rejected overtures from Kerry, the Democratic presidential nominee in 2004, to form a bipartisan ticket and run with Kerry as his candidate for vice president.
Kerry had no kind words for his Senate colleague Sunday, accusing McCain of poor decision-making on everything from backing tax cuts for the wealthy to making support for continuing the U.S. military presence in Iraq the centerpiece of his presidential campaign.
"John McCain ... has proven that he has been wrong about every judgment he's made about the war. Wrong about the Iraqis paying for the reconstruction, wrong about whether or not the oil would pay for it, wrong about Sunni and Shia violence through the years, wrong about the willingness of the Iraqis to stand up for themselves," Kerry, who supports Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, said on CBS' "Face the Nation."
"If you like the Bush tax cut and what it's done to our economy, making wealthier people wealthier and the average middle class struggle harder, then John McCain is going to give you a third term of George Bush and Karl Rove," the Massachusetts senator added, echoing an Obama campaign talking point.
Kerry later said the McCain of 2008 isn't the McCain he courted in 2004.
