War and Fisheries and the SOTU

Yesterday was quite the busy one. There was the big Obama endorsement from the Kennedys, of course, which was brilliant and hopeful. It's also all over the news, so you must have seen it. Just in case, though, here's a highlight.

Yesterday was also the State of the Union address, the annual report from the President to the Congress and to the American people about how the economy doesn't really suck and how great our Middle East 'strategery' is. Nothing seems to say "land of the free and home of the brave" to this President like warrantless wiretapping and fearmongering. Sadly, or perhaps not, I had to drink every time he said 'veto' or 'terra', and by the end of the hour I was slurring as bad as W. So now I don't recall half of what he said, which is probably for the best. In contrast to President Bush's divisive, hour-long lecture, Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius gave the official Democratic response, a message of unity and change.

Here's Senator Kerry's response, which was much more sober than mine, and a bit more biting than Gov. Sebelius'. In it, the Senator reflects on the administration's failures and looks forward to change with a new administration after seven years of Bush's destructive policies.

“Tonight President Bush reminded America of eight years of opportunities squandered, a people divided, and precisely why there is so much hunger for change in our country. For millions who have seen their wages squeezed, their health care costs soar, their homes lost, their loved ones sent to fight in an endless war, and their country’s moral authority damaged, this should have been a speech aimed at a new beginning. Instead, they will have to wait for the next President to turn the page, unite our country, stabilize our economy, and at last get serious about the business of creating good jobs, restoring America’s credibility in the world, responsibly ending the war in Iraq, and rallying America to the great challenge of global climate change. Until then, I will continue to push for change that makes America stronger at home and in the world.”

Here's something you may not have seen yesterday, but is well worth watching. Sen. Kerry met yesterday with the editorial board of the Quincy Patriot Ledger, and spoke on a variety of topics, including his endorsement of Sen. Obama, the economy, the war and fisheries.
