From the KerryVision Vault: An Interview with Tavis Smiley

[UPDATE: Updated to fix a broken link; the video plays now.]

While the Senate is on recess, we have time to catch up with some interesting videos that everyone may not have seen. This interview on the Tavis Smiley show, from November 2005, is interesting for a few reasons, perhaps most of all for the discussion of JK's determination to change US policy in Iraq and enable us to begin bringing home troops. In these times, when the media's short memory encourages the creation of myths -- such as that JK only began criticizing the war recently (the reality is that he warned President Bush against rushing to war even before the invasion, and has continually spoken out against the Administration's colossal failures of judgment in Iraq) --, it's interesting to see what was actually said "back then." JK talks candidly about what he thinks when he looks at how things are going in the US and Iraq -- knowing how different it would've been if he had been president --, how he feels about the fact that public opinion has largely come around to agreeing with him on the war (recall that the majority of Americans supported Bush on the war back in 2004), and the evidence that was then coming out (and continues to come out) that the Bush Administration misled Congress and the American people. But even with such serious topics, JK's energy and the fact that he was obviously enjoying the conversation with Tavis Smiley make for an engaging interview to watch. Enjoy!

Yes, Senator Kerry, what could have been. I think of that everyday. That was a terrific interview, and to think it was almost 2 years ago, and here we are in such a mess in Iraq.

What could have been. I think of the 1588 lives (that isn't even including the injuries and the cases of PTSD) of our troops that have been taken just since Nov. '05, and how our soldiers would have been home by now and not in the middle of a civil war.

This country, the troops and the world are missing out on an exceptional leader. Tavis, we love him too.

This one really brought a smile to my face. It's always fun to see him interviewed by Tavis because they feel comfortable with each other and Tavis actually has a BRAIN, unlike some of the people who interview JK. JK is really at the top of his game here, he knows so much and expresses it so well.

I love the Rosa Parks bit ("she refused to go to the back of the bus, so she belongs at the front of the Capitol.")

Love, also, how JK just CRUSHES that ridiculous Bush attack quote. Bush really shouldn't have had a chance against him, as we saw in the debates.
